This month's tip:
Refridgerators don't need a lot of upkeep -- although we strongly suggest throwing out leftover
brussel sprouts. No one wants a brussel sandwich at midnight...
Newer refridgerators are self defrosting, however, if your appliance could have been on the set of I Love Lucy,
or The Brady Bunch, then you should defrost regularly.
One thing all fridges need is a good dusting. Not just on top -- no one can see there anyway -- and it has no effect
on the operation of the fridge. You need to get UNDERNEATH and BEHIND the fridge.
We know... yuck! However, it needs doing, and here's why:
Pet hair, dirt, dust and crumbs (just to name a few nasty things) collect on the coils in the back and underneather
of the unit. Over time, this can effect the motor and coils functions. That can cause your appliance to break down. Moisture
also collects in these places -- especially here on Long Island. We all know the negative health effects of mold!
Cleaning these places is not as hard as one might think. To clean under the fridge, remove the front grill from the bottom
of the unit. It is usually attached by clips on the bottom of the fridge. Take a broom and slide it under the fridge. Move
it back and forth to any loosen dirt. Then, use your vacume's crevis tool to vacume up the debris.
Now, roll the fridge away from the wall. Special brush attachments are available for this job, and you can find them
at most appliance stores -- or order it from us at Limelite. Many vacumes come with small, hard brisseled brush attachments
-- and those work great too. Starting from the top and working down, vacume the coils clean of dust and dirt.
If you do these simple maintainance steps every few months you'll find your appliance works more efficantly -- and you'll
increase the lifespan of this major appliance!
Here's hoping you and your refridgerator stay cool this summer!
